Grizzard Center for Cherokee Studies

On the Chieftains Museum property are two structures that were part of a large number of such two-story brick houses built in the 1920s to house families of upper level management during the “Mill Period.” One of these structures is the Grizzard Center for Cherokee Studies. The former home houses the Museum’s archival and artifact collections , as well as provides a space for groups and individuals that wish to conduct research on Cherokee history and culture.

The staff and board of directors of Chieftains Museum feel it is important to preserve this building to maintain its place from an important historical time for the Rome community, to ensure the continued well-being of our collections, and to provide an educational space for those researching Cherokee history.

Accordingly, the Grizzard Center possesses a research library consisting of over two hundred and fifty volumes relating to Cherokee Studies, Georgia history, and local history. The Grizzard Center also houses the museums archival and artifacts collections, which focus on the Ridge family, the history of the Chieftains home, and the history of Rome, GA.
