  • October 24
    Medical History Workshop at Georgia Highlands College

    On Wednesday, October 24th at 2:00pm, Chieftains will take part in a program that explores the connections between history and disease at the Cartersville campus of Georgia Highlands College. Dr. Matt Jennings, Associate Professor of History and Political Science at Middle Georgia University will present “What Disease Did (And What It Didn’t): New Perspectives on the Entry of Europe into the Americas,” a lecture on the effects of European diseases on Native American populations at first contact. Dr. Jennings will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Jayme Feagin, Professor of History at Georgia Highlands College will present “The Great Flu and the Great War: The Global Impact of Disease in the Early 20th Century,” a lecture on the devastation of the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic to mark the 100th anniversary of this landmark historical event. This program is free and open to the public.

  • October 25
    Chieftains Lecture Series at Berry College

    Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home is honored to co-sponsor a lecture by Dr. Margaret Bender on the history of the Cherokee syllabary and language on Thursday, October 25th at 7:00pm in Evans Auditorium on the Berry College campus. The presentation by Dr. Bender is co-sponsored by Chieftains Museum along with the Department of Sociology/Anthropology and the Environmental Studies Program at Berry College as part of the Chieftains Lecture Series at Berry College. This program is free and open to the public.

  • November 14 - December 21
    The ICE Experience

    Programs are offered from 9:30-11:30am each day from November 14th-December 21st. An indoor picnic location is provided from 11:30am-12:30pm. The cost is $10 per student. Students will have a chance to ice skate for 30 minutes before rotating through two 45-minute classroom experiences to learn about Cherokee history from Chieftains Museum staff and hibernating animals from the ECO Center staff.
