Chieftains Commemorates 200th Anniversary and Encourages the Community to Step Up!

Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home invites the community to help commemorate a milestone in the history of the museum in 2019. Next year will mark the 200th anniversary of Cherokee leader Major Ridge coming to the house that is Chieftains Museum. This means that the cabin located inside the walls and ceilings of the historic house will be at least 200 years old.

The museum plans to host a full calendar of special events in 2019 with at least one program per month to commemorate this important anniversary. Events will include special exhibits, workshops, musical and dance performances, lectures, and a new archaeology dig on the museum campus.

The community is invited to take part in these special events by becoming part of the museum’s Step Up! membership campaign for 2019. Chieftains Museum is one of only five National Historic Landmarks that exist in north Georgia and one of the few private entities to be certified by the National Park Service as a site on the Trail of Tears. With all of these important designations, however, the museum receives no funding from federal, state, or local government agencies to maintain or operate the museum. Instead, income for the museum is generated through fundraising events, grants, admission fees, and museum memberships. Each member of the museum is important to help the museum fulfill its mission to preserve and interpret the history of the 19th century Cherokee through the life, home and property of the Ridge family.

Chieftains encourages the community to Step Up! and become a member to help celebrate this special year in the life of the museum. Museum memberships start at $20 for students and come with special benefits including free museum admission, a 10% discount in the museum store and special access to members only events. Each special anniversary event in 2019 will also have benefits for members from special exhibit previews to discounted ticket prices.

Membership brochures can be found here. Potential members may bring their completed forms and payment to the museum at 501 Riverside Parkway in Rome, mail their membership form and payment to Chieftains Museum at P.O. Box 373, Rome, GA 30162, or call the museum at (706) 291-9494 to pay for a membership by card over the phone.

The museum hopes that everyone will Step Up! in 2019 and become a part of this historic anniversary.
