Cherokee Carvers:  Tradition Renewed

June 29-Aug. 31

This special exhibit will examine different aspects of modern Cherokee carving.  It will include ritual objects, functional wares and pieces designed to be sold to tourists and collectors.  The exhibitors include both stone and wood carvings and focuses on artists working in Western North Carolina today.

This project is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.  Regular admission applies.

September Events

Old Ways Demonstration Day

Saturday, September 4th, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m

Come and see how things were done in the "Old Days" as skilled craftsmen demonstrate the old jobs and skills.  Basketweaving, quilting, weaving, spinning, quilling, antique gas engines, chair caning, old time music.  Special guest, Robin Jumper, a member of the Cherokee Nation, demonstrating Cherokee Fingerweaving.  Games and crafts for the kids, lots of fun and surprises for all.  Most of the demonstrations will be held inside, so don't let the heat keep you from coming!  Admission:  $5.00 adults, $3.00 senior citizens, and $2.00 for children.  Don't miss this fun day!

Hallowed Hauntings

October 30th - 7:30 pm

Come to Chieftains for the annual scary stories presented by the Seven Hills Tellers.  Good old family fun, 7:30 is stories for all ages, then at 8:30, its “enter at your own risk!”  Scarier stories for older listeners.

Admission, $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for students.  Old time Halloween fun!

November Events

Christmas at Chieftains

November 12th through January 7th

Join us for our special Christmas exhibit.  Period trees decorated in the ways they would have been during different eras of the past.  Ridge’s time, Civil War, Victorian, 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.  Period toys and information on life during those times also on display.  Regular admission.

December Events

Homecoming at Chieftains

December 4th 7:00pm - 9:00pm

View the trees as few have, by Christmas lights! Entertainment and refreshments, all free of charge, Chieftain's gift to the community.  Beautiful night for the entire family!

 

Chieftains Museum Grizzard Center Available for Receptions

The Grizzard Center for Cherokee Studies, the brick house closest to the Museum, is available for rental for receptions, corporate retreats, civic organization meetings, etc. Cost is $100 for a full eight-hour period, $75 for a half day. The Center has a full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, and microwave. Two restrooms are available. Please call Claudia Oakes,
